Buenos Aires - week 3

A little bit of Japan in Argentina

Today was a cooler day and a bit humid;  I just got back from dinner.  I went to a Japanese restaurant just a block away  from the apartment in Caballito.  I have been to 2 Japanese restaurants now in Buenos Aires.  From what little I have read on the Internet, the Japanese were one of the first non-European communities in Argentina and primarily from Okinawa.   This restaurant is called Deygo and is on Rio de Jaineiro.  Last week, I went to another Japanese restaurant further North in the Almagro barrio.  The name eludes me (typical).  The food in both places was quite good.  Sushi is on the menu but the sushi selection is not much more than Salmon;  Tonight,I had a dish of tempura and it was quite good; I was craving something a little different and was quite looking forward to having some Japanese food.  Argentina is like Spain that people don't eat dinner until about 9 PM.

As I have walked around this area, I have seen two Japanese Laundromats; how do I know they were Japanese?  They had the word "Japonesa" in the signage.  And there is even a Japanese/Spanish private school of some kind in Caballito as well.

Buenos Aires - week 2

A short post for the moment.

Thanks for the emails and comments.  I really do appreciate knowing what people think of my "rambles".

A few things:  I did go back to the big super market nearby and they did have chicken and carrots this time.  On the note of food shopping, I am told this week to boycott buying potatoes and pumpkins as they are overpriced! A barrio is the Spanish word for 'district'. So when I was saying I am renting an apartment in the "Barrio Caballito", I am staying in the Caballito district.

Davide was curious about pizzas here.  Well, pizzas are very predominant in the city and there was pizzas I have not had before like a "Fugazetta".  A Fugazetta is made with cheese and onions, infused olive oil and garlic.  No tomato sauce in sight in this pizza; the pizza is white.

Last Sunday, I had a very enjoyable stroll in San Telmo to see the weekend market.  I was kind of thinking in my mind that it would be just antiques.  Yes, there were antiques but also many artsits were selling there wares and handicrafts.  And there are some funky boutiques there as well.   I was with Holly, Beto & Caroline.  And we ended the day with some beers in Bar Britanico.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

I am now in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I have been wanting to come back here since my first trip over 2 years ago.

This time I am staying a bit longer; it will be about two months.  I have rented an apartment through a friend of a friend.  I am staying in the Caballito barrio (Note: the picture above is just a random building in Buenos Aires).  It is not as cool and trendy as Palermo Vieojo where I stayed last time but this time I am on a budget.  Also, part of the plan was to avoid as much winter as I can.  While, London is getting colder and the days are shorter the opposite is happening here in Argentina.

So far, I have meet up with some friends from before like my friend Steve and his family.  And I have met some new people this time.  I have met a fellow Vancouverite Holly Foster.  I thank DJ Clarence from Vancouver for the introduction.

And I have stared taking guitar lessons.  I need to buy a guitar quick.  My teacher Cristian was showing me how to use guitar tabs and his song choice was "No Surprises" by Radiohead; I was very happy to be learning how to play a song from one of my favourite bands.
